Watching our video you will notice the many different forms of multimodal communication platforms used. We used information slides, subtitles to make the video more assessable for all viewers, background music for emphasis on emotional appeal to our audience and transitions to allow our viewers to reflect. In class we looked at a website called “The Olive Project” which was a website that used many multimodal platforms similar to how we composed our final video. In the book we read in class called Out on a Wire we learned about signposting which is used in multimodal composition to draw attention to certain aspects of the work and to make sure the viewer understands and sees exactly what you want them to see. My group wanted to focus on capturing emotion, providing information the viewer would need to understand the project with no background knowledge and we want to leave space for the viewer to reflect.

The multimodal platforms we used to capture these goals were the addition of music that complimented the piece at the beginning and end of the video. We wanted this choice in music to help elicit emotion. In order to give our viewers the information they would need to understand this project with no background knowledge we provided informative slides on the conflict background. We also wanted to be sure to separate the different topics that Clement shared with us; we did this by using black transition slides. These transition slides were also placed to give the viewer time to internalize and reflect on the story.

I feel that my group’s choice of modes really helps capture what we wanted to tell about Clements story. The modes provides emotion, they make it simple to understand and they help capture the overall theme of this entire class project. I think the beginning black slide with the title and Clements voice begins provoking the emotion we wanted our viewers to feel. The transitions also help allow the viewer to feel and reflect on those emotions and the music shows our viewers when and what to feel. I think the modes we chose allowed us to achieve out overall goal of creating a realistic authentic and powerful video for our community member’s story.
