When conducting the interview each group was required to map out what questions we wanted to ask our community members. From our previous viewing of a Clement Shabani video we made the assumption that we would only need a few big questions for Clement and that he would be able to tell us a lengthy story about his life experiences without needing guided questions from us. Clement did just that, he provided us with about an hour of useful and insightful information that we then had to condense into a 5-10 minute video.
The Interview
Most people would assume that having a lot of useful video would be ideal in a time like this but my group found it very difficult to step back and really think about what parts of the interview would be crucial to our video. In the book we read Out on a Wire by Jessica Able she mentions framing in one of the chapters. Framing is creating a focus point using visuals and audio, which is where we started in the editing process. We had to think of our main focus points we wanted in order to tell Clements story in a good light and then we would move on to what information we needed from the video to compliment those focus points. We decided that we wanted to focus the video on what Clements life was like in The Congo, the journey of his family’s escape and we wanted to then move along to what Clement is doing now that he is here in the U.S.
